Citing our October film Lost in Detention, 30 members of Congress are pressing the Government Accountability Office to look into the issue of sexual abuse at immigration detention centers:

… This review should include facilities run by the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE), private facilities under contract with ICE to hold immigration detainees, and those public facilities (like county jails) also under contract with ICE. Additionally, please identify what steps DHS is taking to rectify the problem and suggest any actions it needs to consider in order to ensure that sexual abuse does not continue to plague the immigration detention system.

It's been a few short years since the concept for the Investigative Reporting Workshop originated over a series of coffee and lunch meetings. Since then, the idea has grown to a reality that now includes offices on New Mexico Avenue and a staff of 20-plus strong investigative reporters and editors.

In that time, we've launched nine in-depth investigations ranging from nuclear energy's big lobbying push and green energy stimulus funds going overseas to an analysis of financial statements from every bank in the country and the political influence of media and broadband companies.

The debut Workshop/PBS FRONTLINE investigative documentary "Flying Cheap" is re-airing nationwide on PBS 9 p.m. tonight (check your local listings).

One of the highest rated shows of the season, "Flying Cheap" received kudos from media critics across the country.

We definitely struck a chord with "Flying Cheap" and are now working on a follow-up special that will probe the section of the industry that works on the planes before they take off - airline maintenance - and in particular, the trend toward outsourcing both domestically and abroad.

In our effort to educate ourselves about the many changes in the airline ...

New rules still don't cover immigrants

A zero-tolerance policy and a set of new rules to protect against sexual assault and rape in prisons nationwide were announced Thursday by the Justice Department. The new rules come nearly a decade after Congress mandated new rape protections for those behind bars under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003. But the new regulations won't immediately impact the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration detention centers, as it still has 120 days to write its own rules to comply with PREA and another 240 days to finalize them.
